چکیده

EditoriAL EditoriAL Over the course of evolution, microorganisms have developed innovative survival strategies to thrive in their hosts. 1 The human body is home to many species of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other invertebrate parasites. Some of these organisms that live and thrive in humans are com-mensals and are harmless. They may be also beneficial to the host as they provide certain nutrients or compete with patho-genic organisms for space and recourses. 2 However, there is also a myriad of organisms that are pathogenic to the hosts. One of the mechanisms that empower pathogenic organisms to avert or sub-vert the host's surveillance and defense mechanisms is molecular mimicry. The pressure to evolve molecular mimics may have arisen when the primordial free-living organisms " chose " to parasitize other organisms. Molecular mimicry is the sequence or structural resemblance of molecules of the host and the microbe.

Vascular Mimicry Expression in Invasive Ductal Carcinoma; A New Technique for Prospect of Aggressiveness

Background & Objective: In vascular (vasculogenic) mimicry (VM), tumoral cells mimic the endothelial cells and form the extracellular matrix-rich tubular networks. It has been proposed that VM is more extensive in aggressive tumors. This study was designed to investigate the rate of VM expression in the stromal cells of invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and to find its relationsh...

Immune evasion and the evolution of molecular mimicry in parasites.

Parasites that are molecular mimics express proteins which resemble host proteins. This resemblance facilitates immune evasion because the immune molecules with the specificity to react with the parasite also cross-react with the host's own proteins, and these lymphocytes are rare. Given this advantage, why are not most parasites molecular mimics? Here we explore potential factors that can sele...

The Guillain-Barré syndrome: a true case of molecular mimicry.

Molecular mimicry between microbial antigens and host tissue forms an attractive hypothetical mechanism for the triggering of autoimmune disease by preceding infections. Recent crucial reviews state that molecular mimicry, as the causative mechanism, remains unproven for any human autoimmune disease. However, the peripheral neuropathy Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is largely overseen in this de...

Mechanisms of molecular mimicry involving the microbiota in neurodegeneration.

The concept of molecular mimicry was established to explain commonalities of structure which developed in response to evolutionary pressures. Most examples of molecular mimicry in medicine have involved homologies of primary protein structure which cause disease. Molecular mimicry can be expanded beyond amino acid sequence to include microRNA and proteomic effects which are either pathogenic or...

Disease mimicry--a pathogenetic concept for T cell-mediated autoimmune disorders triggered by molecular mimicry?

Molecular mimicry is considered as a mechanism by which infectious pathogens may break immunological tolerance and cause autoimmune disease. It implicates that peptides shared between pathogen and host may induce cross-reactive immune reactions. According to this hypothesis, the resulting autoimmune response actually represents a secondary immune response. It is mediated by cross-reactive T cel...

In Silico Perspectives on the Prediction of the PLP’s Epitopes involved in Multiple Sclerosis

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS). The main cause of the MS is yet to be revealed, but the most probable theory is based on the molecular mimicry that concludes some infections in the activation of T cells against brain auto-antigens that initiate the disease cascade. Objectives: The Purpose of this research is the...
